Inside or outside protected areas
Both CWR conservation inside and outside protected areas are important and
necessary, but careful attention should be paid to their different specific aspects.
CWR populations grow in diverse types of areass (e.g. they are often found growing in anthropogenic and disturbed habitats) and CWR hotspots do not always project onto existing protected areas (PAs). Therefore, conservation outside PAs is also necessary. Although, both conservation inside and outside PAs share some practices, there are some other specific management tips that should be considered.
Even if there are not many CWR in situ conservation showcases or not many that meet the minimum standards for proper genetic diversity conservation, the number of CWR genetic reserves keeps growing both inside and outside protected areas.
